Mine Detection Dogs

With the Training of Mine Detection Dogs, we began directly after the civil war in Bosnia. First by the order of a support-organization and later then by the order of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Mine Detection Dog or Mine-Trackers were first trained with us on the spot and then we prepared them together with their new local dog-handlers for the UN-Test which was newly introduced in those days.

All teams passed this test with bravour and could immediately be used for the mine- detection.

Even today our teams are working very successfully in Southeast-Europe, Africa and Asia. For the people living there, our work makes it possible to move freely without fear in their countries.

Often we are asked whether the dogs are used as „living shield “. We can answer this with a clear NO.

Dog-Handlers and Mine Detection Dogs are team-partners and carry the same risk in mutual trust.

The free-search finds no application since the dog cannot rummage but should follow a straight thought line.

A Mine-Detection Dog is trained so that he gives only a response to mines lieing directly in front of him. Mines being approximately 1-2m beside the animal will be ignored. These procedures minimize a possible risk quite decisively.

The mine-search comprises several use-types and possibilities and we would gladly inform you about it in a personal conversation.

Mine Detection Dogs accomplish unbelievable performances. They find mines in a depth from up to 1,5 meters under the earth. Mine-trackers even recognize the mine-smell despite the other smells of plants growing in the proximity. Some Mine Detection Dogs do not enter into the field. They identify infested sections on the basis of air-tests.

A well trained and educated Mine Detection Dog works very much more quickly than human beings ever could.

Dependent on the type of the use, Mine Detection Dogs can scan a surface of 1500 to 9000 qms per day. A human being, equipped with mine prod and metal-detector, can approximately work to the comparison 5-10 qm per day.

There is furthermore still no electronic or technical appliance, which equals the capability of a dog-snout. In this area, a well trained Mine Detection Dog is unbeatable.

The education-time for Mine Detection Dogs amounts to approximately 1 Jahr.

Here we use, as also for the education of other special-dogs, the natural playfulness of the animal.
